Rules and Streams use the same underlying process engine, and interface. The procedure for editing the process definition is the same in each case, as are some of the major process steps:

• Gateways
  Create branches in the processing stream:
  • Parallel Split - Create parallel paths in the processing stream
  • Join - Merge one or more paths back together.
    Important: When a Parallel Split is created, a join is required to merge the paths back together.
       Otherwise, the results of processing are indeterminate.
            Best Practice: Create the join point immediately after creating the parallel-branch, so you don't forget.
     
  • Decision
    • Specify expressions and labels for the branches the process will have,
      or select a User Task that has multiple outcomes, in which case the branch labels are determined by the task.
    • When you connect the decision box to another process step, you select one of the branch labels.
    • After it is selected, the branch label appears in the diagram, for that path.
      (You can change it by double clicking on that path.)
    • For the next step you draw a path two, you can select a label that has not already been used.
    • When the process runs, the first branch taken is the first one for which the expression evaluates to true, or which has matching task result.
      
      

  To add a gateway step, click the Gateways icon and drag one of the icons that appears into the diagram.​

• End Points
  • Drag the End icon into the diagram and draw an arrow to it from any step to end the process path at that point.
    When the last path has reached its endpoint, the process is completed.
    (The initial process definition already has an endpoint, so this icon is needed only when a gateway has been added.)
